Dec 18th Tues 7pm 5k run throught grassland was beautiful at night.   Our fearless leader took a shortcut past a friends house, and then down an alley, and in the dark a bunch of us "lost" the official course, but we had fun running past all the beautiful lights.  Matt Espenshade and family hosted a post run party at his house.  Water and hot chocolate with whipping cream were enjoyed by everyone.

Tylor Cavender sent in the results of the Falcon 5K race.  The fastest runners were

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the UTPB Falcon 5K and Fun Run held this past Saturday, December 8th. I just wanted to thank you for supporting the UTPB Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) in fundraising $675 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Our minimum goal was $400 and for the 35+ people who ran or walked, you helped make this goal achievable.  June Marie Rodriguez

Tues Dec 11th was cold.  The Midland YMCA has a good cycling workout on stationary bikes Tues & Thurs at 5:45pm.  We practiced jumps, climbs, and sprints.

Coach Jeremy's swim workout for this Mon, Dec 10th was the following: 200 warm-up, 2 x 200 {1:00 rest}, 4 x 150  75 Breast + 75 Freestyle {:45 rest}, 5 x 100  50 Back + 50 Freestyle {:30 rest}, 4 x 75 Build Up {:30 rest}, 4 x 50 Freestyle {1:15}, 2 x 100 cool-down.

The Falcon 5K race at UTPB this Saturday was a lot of fun.  It was put on by the UTPB Falcon cross country teams to benefit Make-A-Wish, and was organized by Tylor Cavender, the race director.  The UTPB runners need sponsors for the mens and womens teams.  Head Coach Cross Country Men/Women, Pam Gray, would like more support for the teams.

Fred Hunley submitted this to PBBA November Newsletter: Congrats to Chance Payton in the worlds Duathlon competition ... . As I understand he placed #10 in his age division and #31 overall over international competition. Man he must have been screamin'. He claimed he was a little worried during the race since he had lost two water bottles, and a gel bottle (What a blow to his calorie intake) and the roads were very rough. But things started clicking, he felt good. Mans gotta do what a mans gotta do. Well if you see him out riding or running, pat him on the back and tell him he did great. Maybe just catch him in the parking lot at Peyton's he is a lot easier to keep up with there. We had someone else who was going but the training was interrupted by health issues; Kelly Thompson would have done very well, I'm sure. Lets keep after him, OK.

We had a fairly good swim group this Monday, Nov. 12th from 7-8pm.  Craig Freeman joined our COM masters workout.  Tonight's workout consisted of a 300yd warm-up, 4 X 100 {2:20} build-up by 100's, 200 kick, 4 X 100 {2:15} build-up each 100, 200 pull, 4 X 100 {2:10} hold pace, 200 easy, 8 X 50 work turns (try not to breathe into & off walls) {1:00}, 100 medium pace warm-down.  Mon, Wed, & Thurs the workouts are held at COM at 7pm, although some of us show up at 6:30pm on Wed.  Join us and Coach Jeremy.

Craig Freeman and Rob Crumpler completed the Louisville Ironman.

Montana is awesome as usual.  I ended up winning my age group for the Olympic distance Treasure State Triathlon with a time of 2:38.  I was 8th woman overall and was 35th out of 74 men and women.  I am spending this week doing some mountain runs with my dad and will be joining the Gallatin Valley Bicycle Club for their 3rd annual 3 rivers century ride on Saturday the 25th.  The scenery will be beautiful and I can't wait.  Hope all is well in Midland and I'll be back there next week sometime.  Penny.

Sunday, July 22nd. Penny Wasem came in 18th in the Iron Girl, Irving Triathlon! Sara Scholl, Samatha Bouquin, and Sara Gibbons also finished with great results. The MS 150 mile bicycle ride was also this weekend. Many triathletes participated. I apologize in advance if I missed you. Some of the participants included Russell Livingston, Bill Horne, Melissa Vallee, and Craig Freeman.

I completed the Couples Triathlon in Austin July 15th. I invited a friend to participate in her first triathlon so we could have a mixed friends team. It was great and she did quite well on her first outing. I learned a lot about open water swimming. This swim was 800 meters and I could just barely see the markers. There were a lot of stop and look and swim drills ongoing in my zig zag path to each turn marker. The rolling hills in both the bike and run (run was xterra style) coupled with the humid atmosphere really helped me measure my fitness level. There was not much left at the end of the race. I did wear the only Midland Triathlon shirt at the race. isn't that hard to believe? There were a few heads over 700 that participated in this race which made it my largest event to date. - David McAtee

In cycling news, Stephen Dodd won the Class B PBBA Time Trial Series and Teresa Newman won the overall Women's Time Trial.  I believe that Teresa has just been upgraded to a category 2.

Sunday, July 8th was a busy day for the Dodds.  Stephen Dodd and family went to Roswell for the BOTTOMLESS TRIATHLON 2007.  Stephen and Pam AND 10 year old Olivia all completed this triathlon.

In cycling news, Stephen Dodd won the Class B PBBA Time Trial Series and Teresa Newman won the overall Women's Time Trial.  I believe that Teresa has just been upgraded to a category 2.

June 24th was a busy triathlon day at Buffalo Springs in Lubbock.

In the Buffalo Springs Lake Tri Raider Sprint, Midlanders completing this event were John and Sarah Lehman, Greg Larson, Sara Scholl, and an Abilene Midlander John Paul Barrandey (John Paul completed this tri in 1h 21m, coming in 18th overall);

from Odessa - Brady Coke, Kimberly Clinkenbeard, Samantha Bouquin, and Melody Watson.

In the Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3, Chance Payton of Lamesa finished at 4h 55m.  Midland finishers were Craig Freeman at 5h 23m, Stephen Dodd at 5h 41m, Robert Crumpler at 5h 44m, Penny Wasem at 6h 6m, and Jaime Azuaje at 6h 31m.

I completed the Danskin Tri in 01:57:18 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I am very excited with this being my very first individual tri!!  I saw Penny there also, I believe she came in second in our age group!!! Very impressive.  - Sandra Bryant

Some of the Danskin (Austin) finishers from Odessa are Samantha Bouquin, Sara Gibbons, Kimberly Clinkenbeard, Melody Watson, Allison Wilson, Courtney Myers, and Jeanine Trantham.  Finishers from Midland included Sondra Richards, Linda Witte, Jacci Vallee, Melissa Vallee, Kelly Blackburn, Sandra Bryant, and Penny Wasem.  Penny not only came in 2nd in her age group, but came in 22nd out of over 2,612 competitors, beating four of the elite pro's.

Milkman Triathlon Results:  Chance Payton came in 2nd in his age group and 11th out of 103 males competing.

Buffman and Squeaky Results:  Craig Freeman came in 3rd and David Shaw came in 8th in their age groups.  Samantha came in 4th and Sara came in 5th in their age group.

Midlander's placed well at the San Angelo 66 mile bike race (Tour de Burma).  I'm told that Jason Kinman took 1st place, Kelly Thompson took 2nd, and other Midlanders included  Stephen Dodd.

Kelly Thompson and Chance Payton each took 1st place in their age group of the Striders Duathlon! This qualifies them to compete in the International Duathlon competition later this year.

Saturday Read Johnston and Sandra Bryant competed in the Rogue 1 mile open water swim on Lake Travis by the Mansfield Dam.  They each were pleased with the results of about 38 minutes.  On Sunday they drove up to Lubbock to join Prentice Bryant as a team in the Ransom Canyon Tri.  Sandra swam, Read biked (& crashed), and Prentice ran.  Our team came in 2nd or 3rd.  Chance Payton finished 2nd overall and 1st in his age group with an awesome time of 1:22:05!  The overall winner was Seth Wilkie of Albuquerque NM with a time of 1:19:20.  Penny Wasem finished 1st in her age group!  Samantha Bouquin and Sara Gibbons of Odessa and Neil Truex of Midland also competed in this triathlon.

Stephen Dodd and Read Johnston finished all 3 stages of the bike race in Fort Davis.  Teresa Newman took 1st place in the womens category 3 and was faster than the winner of the womens category 1/2 by almost a minute!

This is for all you that complain about your swimming:  Check out May 5th in Austin for Beginner thru Advanced Clinic.  Those of you that want a ride to the Austin open water clinic and swim, please contact Read Johnston 349-6397.  Our plans are to leave early Friday morning, spend one night in Austin, attend the clinic and open water swim, and return that day.  We also have entered the Ransom Canyon Tri in Lubbock on the 6th.

David McAtee was the only member that showed up at the Saturday Fun Triathlon.  Sunday rained all day, and the cycling was called off.  Read Johnston goofed off and worked on his arms by canoeing Mariscal Canyon in Big Bend with the Midland Outdoor Club.  The water level was about 1 1/2 feet on Friday and Saturday.  As we were packing up our tents Sunday morning, someone went down to the river, and it was up to 13 feet and rising.  As we had a two hour drive down the river road that went through "dry river beds" before we reached pavement, we left promply.  A park ranger told us that one of the dry river crossing now has 59 feet of water, and of course the whole river road is closed.  We were real close to being evacuated by the park service.

This weekend will be a busy one with a local duathlon being a qualifier race, the annual bike Hammerfest race, and the COM swim meet.  With all this activity, there may not be anyone showing up Saturday morning at COM except at noon for the swim meet.  The same goes for the local Sunday bike ride.

Sat April 14th:  Master the Mountain.  Only one Midland Triathlon Club member participated.  The Lee family of Midland did extremely well with Nathan well ahead of the first pack of runners and winning the 5k.  His father Robert was one of the first runners to finish the 10k.  Read Johnston came in right after Robert.   Nathan has just signed with Lubbock Christian University to run cross country in the fall.  He's off this Thursday to state competition in the Dallas area with the 1 mile run his favorite.  Let's wish him well.

Those of you that wish to car pool over to Big Spring Saturday for the "Mountain" run, meet at the COM south parking lot at 7:10am.  The run fee is $18 with registration at 8am.

April 1st Craig Freeman finished the Lone Star Tri Quarterthon Ironman in Galveston with a time of 2:41:35.

Saturday, April 7th, sleet in the morning.  The PBBA time trial was postponed till later.  The Bloodgusher 5K run had quite a few participants.  From the Midland Triathlon Club, we had Popcorn Leonard and John Lehman both taking first place in their divisions.  John's whole family (his wife, and Sarah, and Jack) each won a ribbon.  David McAtee and Read Johnston also won ribbons.

Mar 31st-April1st.  Saturday Kelly, David, & Read cycled the Midland triathlon loop, and then ran from COM to the new track on Cuthbert.  Kelly ran on the new track while Read & David ran back to COM to finish our tri with the swim.  Sunday Kelly, Chance, Popcorn, and Read joined PBBA in cycling the Gardendale loop.

Mar 25th.  At least 5 of us competed in Alpine at the Sul Ross State University Sprint Triathlon.  Stephen Dodd made us proud with his time of 1:11:55.65, coming in 1st place in his division!  John Lehman came in 1st place in his division with a time of 1:15:02.88!  Read Johnston, David McAtee, and Von McCallum also competed and worked hard to try and keep up with Stephen and John.  The overall individual winner had a time of 1:08:36.06.  Popcorn Leonard was slightly disappointed with his time in the Statesman Capital 10K run in Austin this weekend.  His time was 40:48 with an average pace of 6:34/M.  Kelly Thompson worked out in Midland on Saturday, and the Sunday ride from Cumulus.  He is working hard trying to get ready for the Strider's Duathlon next month in San Angelo.

Mar 17th. Three of us showed up for the triathlon Saturday: John, David, and Read. John's wife and son were also working out, getting ready for triathlons. We took it somewhat easy, as two of us are getting ready for the Alpine Sul Ross SULLY'S SUPER SPRINT Triathlon next weekend.

Mar 10-11th.  PBBA had a very well executed 17 mile time trial for cyclists.  Kelly Brown was the fastest overall with a time of 41:47. Stephen Dodd again placed 1st in his division! Not only was Teresa Newman the fastest in the Women's Division, but was faster than all the men in the B and A divisions! Saturday afternoon Read, John, and David competed in a triathlon, with John way out ahead of the rest of us. Sunday was rainy weather.
